Lullaby Scene

How we build our soundscapes
Where a recording is cut, how long layers overlap and how distance is shaped all affect the result. These are some of the practical problems we have worked on in Lullaby Scene.
A recording is not a complete scene
A source is an individual sound such as rain, wind or a vehicle. A ready-made scene sets a balance among sources; a journey also changes that balance and its effects over time. Editing, arrangement, transitions and event context shape the result. Attribution-required material is documented on our credits page.
Why a loop can sound interrupted
A mismatch between the end and beginning can reveal a join. Simply fading the end can create a quiet gap followed by a restart. Overlapping playback starts the next voice before the previous voice fades away. A microphone bump inside the recording is a different problem: that section needs editing or a replacement source.
Longer overlap is not always smoother
An irregular forest bed may tolerate a long overlap, while rhythmic rails can produce conflicting beats. Overlap can also make a join unexpectedly louder. We listen for gaps, swelling, rhythm conflicts and audible doubling, rather than treating one crossfade length as suitable for every recording.
Stage transitions differ from loop joins
A loop maintains an atmosphere; a stage transition communicates a change of place or state. Leaving a ferry terminal and entering a temple courtyard call for different pacing. Stages use their own balance, filtering, spatial effects and transition timing. A new stage label need not mean every sound changes instantly.
Cues that suggest distance
Volume alone does not establish distance. Treble detail, direct sound versus reverberation, left-right placement and changes over time all contribute. Temple recitation is arranged to suggest a building in the scene. Sirens combine movement and attenuation so they can recede while still sounding.
Events sit over the background
Continuous beds and intermittent events have separate roles. Event intervals and allowed stages vary, so a short test may contain none. Spacing and overlapping voices need control to preserve variation without overcrowding the scene. If a transition bothers you, the scene, stage and approximate elapsed time help us reproduce it.
